The famous dome of Florence! This goes without saying that the Duomo is a thing to do in Florence for two days.

This church with the tower and bright red-orange dome stands out on the skyline of Florence. It is very similar to the Salzburg famous church: Salzburg Cathedral.

Of course, you will see this famous Duomo while taking in the panoramic view at Piazzale Michelangelo. The contract against the rest of the city skyline is distinct. If you want a more personal view you can visit the church. The church itself is free to visit. However, you will need a €15 ticket to climb the cupola (the dome section). This is the location of the famous photos of the close up of the dome against the skyline of Florence. Just note that during high season (April to September during the fine weather and summer vacation) the lines to climb the Duomo can be hours long. So if you are not committed to standing in line for hours during a short trip, then a panoramic view from the Piazzale Michelangelo is preferable.

• Recommendation: Save money and time and visit Piazzale Michelangelo during the high season instead of waiting in line to climb to the dome.

7. Visit Porcellino

Introducing “Porcellino,” a traditional bronze statue located in Florence, Italy. This artwork depicts a wild boar and is considered a symbol of abundance and prosperity. Locals and tourists alike believe that rubbing the boar’s snout will bring good fortune in financial matters. Make sure to visit this impressive sculpture on your next trip to Florence and take part in the city’s beloved tradition. The Porcellino has stood in its current location since 1640, serving as an emblematic attraction for over 380 years.

Porcellino is a famous bronze fountain located in the Piazza del Mercato Nuovo. This market (which sells leather goods!) has the statue right along the outskirts of the market. This fountain is made of bronze, and water drips from the boar’s mouth into a bowl below.

There are two superstations surrounding the statue. One, if you want to return to Florence then rub the snout of the boar. This is similar to the Trevi Fountain found in Rome. Clearly, numerous people want to return as the snout is bright gold compared to the bronze of the statue.

The second superstition is to be granted luck. In order to be granted good luck, place a coin in the snout of the boar. The coin will slip from the mouth, and if the coin goes straight through the grate of the bowl then you will be granted good luck! This is similar to rubbing the nose of Greyfriars Bobby in Edinburgh for luck or tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain in Rome to return.  However, getting the coin from the snout and directly through the grate is not as easy as it would appear, and the visitors there were not granted any luck during my visit (and neither was I!).

Where to Eat in Florence

There are numerous places to eat in Florence. While strolling to these various attractions across Florence you will find numerous outdoor restaurants. The only recommendations that I will make are:

• Eat all the Gelato. There are gelato shops scattered across Florence. Can you visit Italy and not gorge yourself on Gelato?
• Enjoy lunch or dinner at Piazza della Signoria. There restaurants there are nothing fabulous, or breathtaking, however, just sitting down in the center of Florence and enjoying watching the people pass by can be a relaxing experience in Florence.

Travelling to Florence

There are two main methods of traveling to Florence:

• Fly. Fly into the main airport at Florence Airport, Peretola. There are numerous flights from major cities across Europe. However, most flights outside the continent of Europe involve a layover.
• Train. If you are interested in making a longer trip during your stay in Italy, then Florence is easy to access by train. Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station is a great hub to travel to from Rome or Venice. Ultimately, making Florence a great destination stop for a several day long trip across Italy’s major cities. The phone app “Go Euro” can assist in finding ticket prices and times between the different cities of Italy.

Travelling in Florence

The roads in Florence are tiny, and traveling by vehicle is not very popular due to the crowds walking amongst the street. The close vicinity of the locations makes travel by vehicle unnecessary.

If you are arriving by train, the Florence station is centrally located and easy to walk to a majority of the hotels in the center of the city. I stayed at a hotel right next to Piazza della Signoria and it was at most a 20-minute walk from the train station to the hotel.

The rest of the attractions are walking distance. Due to this, there are a variety of walking tours that you can take to take in the above attractions during a short stay in Florence. Or, take matters in your own hands and enjoy strolling along the streets of Florence and take in all the shops and beautiful architecture.
