1. Visit the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

Discover the breathtaking Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, located in Busan, South Korea. The temple requires a little bit of an upstair walk to reach, however, it is not anything to be too concerned about. Additionally, outside the temple, you will find statues of all the zodiac signs, and people frequently take photos with their zodiac sign.

If during your two days in Busan, South Korea you want to partake in a short hike this coastal walk is perfect for you. The hike is approximately 4 miles in total length – but you will hardly notice as you stroll along the coast the entire route. This is one of the best things to do in South Korea as the walk is a beautiful and easy stroll along the coast.

The route is made up of some stairs (nothing scary), and a couple of suspension bridges. The walk offers views out over the ocean, and back towards the city of Busan. There are plenty of signs along the route that depict the different parts of the city that can be seen from the trail.

Enjoy this lovely stroll after a visit to the temple. Pack a lunch and you can enjoy the lunch towards the end of the trail on the numerous rocky platforms next to the ocean.

Total time to complete this walk is only about 2 hours – and that is taking it at a very slow pace. The trail is not very long and does not have much stairs or change in terrain meaning that it is suitable for all ages and physical abilities!

3. Visit Gamcheon Cultural Village

No tour of Busan is complete without a visit to the Gamcheon Cultural Village. The village is famous for the brightly coloured homes that are scattered along the hill. The name was earned after a restoration project that added art projects, repainted alleys and the homes to bring in tourism. Scattered throughout the area you will spot painted stairwells, murals, statues, and other attractions along every corner and turn of the street.

The town makes for some beautiful photo opportunities – and there are options for photography tours – but you will have to work to get to it. The city is located on some very steep hills. When leaving the subway Toseong Station, you can follow the signs to reach the village but it will be on a very steep incline. Anticipate a hearty 30-45 minute walk uphill for approximately one mile.

However, if you are not up for the walk then there is a bus station located right outside the Hospital. Use Exit 6 from the Toseong Station and walk towards the hospital. There will more than likely be a crowd at a bus stop which has the local bus Saha 1-1, Seogu 2 or Seogu 2-2. Take the local bus to the Gamcheon Elementary School Bus Stop.

4. Walk Along Haeundae Beach

Walk down the main strip to Haeundae Beach from the metro station. There you will find the main entrance to the beach and be able to walk along the promenade. Walk down to the end towards the Westin hotel and you will be able to enjoy some of the iconic Haeundae Beach shots.

5. Dongbaek Park

Discover the green paradise of Dongbaek Park! Located on a peninsula extending into Haeundae Beach in Busan, South Korea, this park is famous for its picturesque views of the city skyline and panoramic ocean vistas. Immerse yourself in nature while strolling along walking paths surrounded by colorful flowers, greens, and unique rock formations. Marvel at magnificent sculptures scattered throughout the park that harmoniously blend with the natural surroundings. If you walk to the end of the Haeundae Beach promenade (by the Westin hotel) you will lead into a popular park for sunset views: Dongbaek Park.

This park is small and you can easily enjoy a quick lap around the park in 30 minutes if you are strapped for time. However, if you want to enjoy some more time in the park then take the scenic coastal route that includes bridges and trails.

Head here for sunset, and you can catch some great photos of the sun setting behind Gwangandaegyo Bridge and the other portion of the Busan landscape.

5. Mermaid Statue

The Busan Mermaid Statue is a captivating tourist attraction located in the scenic Haeundae Beach area of South Korea. Measuring over 8 meters high, this magnificent bronze statue represents the story of Princess Hwang-ok, who according to Korean legend was a mermaid that fell in love with a prince and gave up her life in the sea to become his wife. Visitors can admire the intricate details of the statue’s scales and flowing hair as they take in breathtaking ocean views from its perch atop a rock on Incheon Island. If you’re planning a trip to South Korea, don’t miss out on this mesmerizing landmark that’s sure to leave you awe-inspired.

Located within the Dongbaek Park you will find the Mermaid Statue gazing off towards Haeundae beach area.

This statue is located just off the main road route in the Dongbaek Park and you will find signs pointing you in the direction of the statue. Be prepared for a couple of stairs and the option to cross over a bridge.

6. Visit Busan Tower

Explore Busan’s beauty from above at Busan Tower. Standing at 120 meters tall, the tower offers a panoramic view of the cityscape and the surrounding natural wonders. Take in the breathtaking view of Korea’s second-largest city and marvel at its bustling harbor, colorful markets, and mountains that surround it. The tower is not only an observation deck but also houses various exhibitions, offering visitors an insight into Busan’s rich history and culture.

Nestled in Yongdusan Park is the iconic Busan Tower. The tower stands at 120 meters and is visible from different parts of the outlying city.

The tower area offers a mall, and a park to stroll along. Additionally, located near the tower are two of the popular markets in Busan: Jagalchi Market and Gukje Market. The Gukje Market is known for housing, business, and other supplies. You can stroll through here to find a variety of knick-knacks to commemorate your trip to Busan.

If you have worked up a bit of an appetite after taking the stairs up to the Busan Tower. Then head down the road to the Busan Jagalchi Market. The Busan Jagalchi Market is known as the largest fish market in South Korea. There are rows, and rows of aquariums filled with different fish, shellfish, crabs, and urchins. You can pick out a dinner to whip up back at your place, or you can simply dine in. Visit the Jagalchi Market for some fresh fish to take home or head to the second floor to be served at a restaurant. Most of the restaurants offer the same thing – so do not worry too much about deciding on which!

Expect to be heavily hassled at the Busan Jagalchi Market, the vendors are trying to sell you fish to take home, or to have you dine at their restaurant.

If you are limited on time during your two days in Busan, I would recommend cutting this location off of your trip itinerary. Most people go to Busan for the coastal vibes, so this is a bit off the beaten track for that. Enjoy some more time at the beach instead if you are feeling rushed.

Where to Eat in Busan

Visiting Busan for the first time and wondering where to satisfy your hunger pangs? Look no further than the vibrant streets of this bustling city. From sumptuous Korean cuisine to international flavors, Busan boasts an array of food choices that cater to every palate. Sample a steaming hot bowl of bibimbap or slurp on some spicy seafood soup at Jagalchi Market or head over to Gukje Market that attracts foodies with its tantalizing street food options. Fishcakes, tteokbokki, gimbap, hotteok – you name it and they have it! Don’t miss out on the beautiful Doongnae Halmae Pajeon located amidst hills that serves delicious savory pancakes. With so much variety around, eating in Busan can be an adventure in itself.

There is food-a-plenty in Busan. Like most of South Korea, there is no shortage of Korean BBQ places. If you haven’t traveled to South Korea before, then you have to first try a Korean BBQ place. I would say a majority of them are created equally, and you will find a lot along the main strip at Haeundae Beach. Just pop into one, and select meat to start grilling!  If you have the option of getting Beef Galbi (beef ribs basically) then I recommend that – one of my favorite Korean BBQ pieces!

Additionally, there are numerous street vendors. Make sure to grab a ssiat hotteok which is like a little pancake stuffed with brown sugar, nuts and honey.

If you are looking for more market-style food check out the Gukje Market or the Busan Jagalchi Market. You will find vendor options and a more traditional Korean style food service.

If you are more in the mood for Western-style cuisine head over to Haeundae Beach which is a popular tourist destination. You’ll find a mix of pubs and korean style places to eat there. Fancy some fish and chips? Head down to the end of the Haeundae Beach area to Yacht 101 and enjoy some great fish and chips.

Where to Drink in Busan

Experience the best of Busan’s nightlife scene by knowing where to drink! Whether it’s a cold beer or a fancy cocktail, there’s always a perfect spot in this coastal city. Head over to Gwanganli Beach and enjoy drinks with a stunning ocean view, or check out the bars in Seomyeon for their lively atmosphere. Haeundae Beach also offers various options from high-end rooftop bars to local pubs that serve up an ice-cold brew. For those who love craft beer, make your way to the craft beer street in Nampo-dong and try out their unique flavors.

If you are a fan of Craft Beers then head over to Gwangalli Beach area. You will find all of these craft houses there:

• SOL Taphouse (Slice of Life Pizza) – 153 Gwanganhaebyeon-ro, Gwangan-dong, Suyeong-gu, Busan
• Owl and Pussycat Tap Room – 38-1 Namcheonbada-ro, Namcheon-dong, Suyeong-gu, Busan
• Galmegi Brewing Gwangan Brewpub – 58 Gwangnam-ro, Namcheon-dong, Suyeong-gu, Busan

Compared to the rest of South Korea, there is a pretty large brewery selection in Busan. Take advantage of all the beer and enjoy!

I personally recommend the SOL Taphouse – I spent a good part of an afternoon there as you can purpose pizza by the slice and enjoy a large selection of beers. The best part was the fact that the restaurant has a giant panorama window that looks out over the beach and bridge in Busan. If you just want to relax one evening during your trip to Busan, then this is a great place to do it!

Where to stay in Busan

With only two days in Busan, location is key. If you are looking at visiting the above attractions then my recommendation is to find a hotel along Haeundae Beach. This will give you quick access to: Haeundae Beach, Dongbaek Park, and the Mermaid statue and you’ll be able to get some of the iconic photos of Busan without having to travel far.

To visit SOL and the brewery district is a quick 14-minute metro trip away. Igidae Coastal Walk will be further, but well worth the trek.

Though the best reason to stay at Haeundae Beach area is that if you opt-out of doing all the above activities, there is plenty to do just at Haeundae beach meaning you won’t have to travel at all to enjoy the coastal city of Busan.

I personally stayed at the Paradise Hotel which is a large hotel on the beach. This was a great location to enjoy some pool and spa time while looking out over the coast.

Travelling to Busan

• If already in Korea then the best mode of transportation to any of the cities is by train. The trains run often and are faster than driving. There are two trains that run between Busan and Seoul: the KTX and ITX.
  • The ITX will take approximately 6 hours,
  • Whereas the KTX takes approximately 3 hours.
  • There is also the Mugunghwa line which is almost 7 hours.
• However, if you are planning to come straight to Busan there is the Gimhae International Airport that has frequent flights to Japan and other areas in Asia.
• Also, being a coastal city Busan is a destination for cruise lines that either departs from Busan or are visiting for a day during a Japan / China trip.
• Finally, there is the option to drive and experience the thrilling driving that is in South Korea. Driving will take about six hours from Seoul – expect traffic. Also, a fun note is that there is no “fast lane” that Europe and North America is accustomed to. All lanes are open to all speeds of traffic so do not be surprised by slower drivers in the far left lane.

Tips for Train Travel from Seoul to Busan

As stated there are three trains that commute from Seoul to Busan. It depends on how long, or desperate maybe, your travel plans are. Here are the three routes again:

• The ITX:  6 hours,
• KTX (aka Bullet Train):  3 hours.
• Mugunghwa line:  7 hours.

If your plan is two days in Busan, then you need to maximize your time so the faster routes are the best. The ITX is a nicer commuter train but does not go as fast as the KTX which is the Korean Bullet train. The Mugunghwa line is a metro train, therefore the seats are not very comfortable!

Use Korail to search for tickets. Just type in your departure city and arrival as Busan. The website will list all of the train times out, with departure time and arrival time.

If you are looking at doing a weekend trip to Busan, then I would try to buy a week in advance especially during the summer months as people frequently travel down to Busan.

Travelling in Busan

• The best method of travelling in Busan is by the subway system. The system runs throughout the city and makes commuting fairly simple due to apps.
  • Download: Metroman Busan for the Metro times.
  • You will want to be a T-Money card. Which you can purchase at most convenience stores around South Korea. However, if you are only making a short trip to Busan, then I would recommend just buying the temporary cards. Make sure you return it for your 500 won refund!
• Additionally, you can drive, commute by taxi, or by the local bus system.
