About Koko Head

Have you heard about Koko Head? It’s a volcanic tuff cone on the eastern end of Oahu, Hawaii that provides breathtaking views of the surrounding coastline. With an elevation gain of over 1,000 feet, hiking to the top is known as a challenging workout but the stunning vistas make it all worth it. Not only can you see Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay from above, but on clear days you can even spot Molokai and Lanai in the distance.

The Koko Head hike is a popular activity for locals and tourists alike. Koko Head has become a popular hike in Oahu, due to the proximity to Waikiki, the large tourist destination. The hike offers some stunning views from the top and can be accomplished in as quickly as an hour (if you’re in shape).

This former military railway played a key role in defending Hawaii during WWII, and now stands as a popular hiking destination. The railway system that now leads to the top of the popular hiking trail was once used by the US military during World War II to transport supplies up and down the mountain. The railroad utilized steep inclines and countless step-like structures that continue to challenge hikers today. As you trek up the steep incline, take a moment to reflect on the resilience of our island’s past generations who built this monumental infrastructure.

Ultimately, you are hiking in history! However, once you start you may wish the train was still there.

The trail at Koko Head

This steep trail features over 1,000 railway steps that will test your endurance and determination. The trail at Koko Head is pretty straight forward. You will follow a path from the parking lot, that is only about 200 ft, from there you will reach what 98% of the hike will be: stairs. There are 1,048 railway stairs to reach to the top of Koko Head.

The railway stairs are a little higher than a normal stair step. The average step is only 7-11 inches tall, whereas on these stairs you will be stepping over a foot in height. Some may require you to use your hands to pull yourself up due to the distance.

Some of the more deteriorated stairs have been given blocks to help climb up to the next stair as there is too large of a gap now between the stairs.

As stated the stairs will be 98% of your hike. You will climb them to the top!

The Bridge

At one portion of the tracks ,you will cross over a little gap. This section is known as the “bridge”. It is approximately 15 railroad stairs across.

The height has scared some people, so there is an option to go around the side. However, I will warn that if it is a bit wet outside the side part becomes very muddy and slippery.

The bridge is easy to cross, and if you are a little worried – the gap between the tracks is small enough that there is no way a person could fit through it and fall.

Get ready to be blown away by the stunning views from the top of Koko Head. From up high, you’ll be able to see sweeping panoramic views of Oahu’s rugged coastline, as well as the surrounding lush forests and mountains.

After climbing the 1,048 steps (and listening to people tell you that you’re almost there) you will reach the summit! The hike, consisting of 1,048 stairs straight up an old tramway incline is tough, but once you reach the summit at 1,208 feet above sea level it’s all worth it. You’ll get to see everything from Hanauma Bay to Portlock and beyond.

You can walk around the sides to get varying views from the top over the bay, or back towards Waikiki. Take a moment to sit down, and relax as the stairway down is just as tiring as the climb up.

The total time to hike Koko Head: 2 hours.

If you are fit, or a stair master, you can reach the top of Koko Head in approximately 50 minutes. When I was there in the morning there were people doing it for the daily workout, by the time I had reached the top one gentleman had already finished it three times (he also had shown up prior to me).

If you are like me, and not the greatest at stairs (or hungover from Tequila) then the climb will take approximately 1.5 hours.

Going down is much quicker, but still tiresome, and will take approximately 30 minutes. The difference in steps on the train stairs makes it hard to rush down – so be careful of your foot getting caught due to the varying height.

Hiking Koko Head at Sunrise

Can you hike Koko Head at sunrise? Yes, you can hike Koko Head at sunrise. Starting the hike early in the morning allows you to witness the sunrise from the summit, offering a stunning and serene experience. The cooler temperatures and fewer crowds during the early hours contribute to a more enjoyable and peaceful ascent. Just be sure to bring a flashlight, especially for the initial dark portion of the trail, and plan accordingly to reach the summit in time for the sunrise spectacle.

I highly recommend embarking on the hike at sunrise for several compelling reasons:

  1. Cooler Temperature: The early hours offer a more pleasant and cooler climate, ensuring a comfortable hiking experience.
  2. Fewer Crowds: Sunrise attracts fewer people, allowing for a more serene and solitary journey. During my visit in July, I encountered only about 10 individuals on the trail at 4:30 am.
  3. Breathtaking Sunrise Views: Catching the sunrise from the summit provides awe-inspiring panoramic views. The tranquility and beauty of the moment are unparalleled.

Personally, I chose the early hike to revel in the solitude and witness the captivating sunrise. Setting out at 4:30 am, I encountered a mix of locals, some using the stairs for daily exercise, and a few others seeking the sunrise spectacle. As I reached the summit around 5:40 am, the group dwindled to about five individuals, creating a serene ambiance perfect for enjoying the sunrise.

For those considering a sunrise hike, bringing a flashlight is encouraged, especially for the initial dark stretch. I found it immensely helpful until the morning light illuminated the path halfway through my journey.

Hiking Koko Head at Sunset

Experiencing sunset at Koko Head in Oahu, Hawaii, is a magical and serene adventure. As the day winds down, the steep ascent to the summit is accompanied by the warm hues of the setting sun, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The panoramic views from the top showcase the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of orange and pink. The tranquil atmosphere at sunset provides a perfect opportunity to reflect on the day’s accomplishments while basking in the beauty of the Hawaiian scenery. Hiking Koko Head at sunset offers a unique perspective and a peaceful way to conclude the day on this challenging yet rewarding trail.

I will warn that this will be way more popular than the hiking at Sunrise option. The views will be similar except the sunset will be more in the Waikiki direction instead of over the hills and water.

Parking at Koko Head

lease note that information, including parking availability and hours, may have changed since then. For the most accurate and up-to-date details, I recommend checking with local authorities, the Hawaii State Parks website, or other reliable sources.

Typically, there is a parking lot near the Koko Head District Park, which serves as the trailhead for the Koko Head Crater Trail. The parking lot may have limited spaces, especially during peak times. It’s advisable to arrive early, especially if you plan to hike at sunrise or sunset.

The official parking area for Koko Head opens at 6:30 am. This parking area will be right at the trailhead, and when it is open it is already full! As a majority of people like to get there when the crowds are fewer in the early morning.

If you arrive before 6:30 am for a sunrise hike at Koko Head then there is parking on the street in the neighborhood outside the gate. I and a couple of others parked right outside the gate and then walked the way into the park.

So yes, you can arrive at Koko Head before sunrise and before the parking area is open – you will just have to walk a bit more.

Driving to Koko Head

Getting from Waikiki to Koko Head is relatively straightforward and typically takes about 30-40 minutes by car, depending on traffic. The route involves driving east on the H-1 East highway, taking Exit 27 toward Koko Head, and continuing on Kalanianaole Highway until you reach Koko Head Park Road. However, it’s important to note that the drive may be subject to typical traffic conditions, and parking at the Koko Head Crater Trailhead can be limited, especially during peak times.
