The Story behind SS Yongola
There is a rumour that a “horse sunk the Yongala”. As there was a racehorse aboard the Yongala, which is said to have delayed the departure of the boat for several hours to ensure the horse, “Moonshine”, was loaded.
After departure, it is said that the boats captain never received any of the warning calls about an incoming cyclone, and unfortunately steered straight into it. At first, many thought the boat had sought shelter, but after never arriving at the destination, Townsville, it was determined something must have happened. Search parties and maritime boats searched the coasts for survivors or any signs of the boat, and nothing was found.
A month later, a horse carcass was found washed ashore in Cleveland Bay which was believed to have been the racehorse “Moonshine” that was registered on the manifest for the SS Yongala, however, the boat was still not found immediately after the remains in 1911.
The boat was eventually found in 1958, off Cape Bowling Green, 48 nautical miles southeast off of her final destination of Townsville.
The boat is now known as an artificial reef. Typically found in a heavy current area, the reef life on the boat is abundant, and a large variety of fish can be found around the sunken SS Yongala.

If you are visiting from out of town then you will probably need to know the best mode of transportation around the city. Here are some of the options:
- Rental Car. There are options at the airport and rental car agencies in town.
- Sunbus. There is a local bus system that you can ride for approximately cost $1.80/3.60. Route maps and timetables are available.
- Taxis. You will find taxi stands with the option of jumping into one of those. There is also uber, but I think there was only one person doing it while I was there.
- Walk. If you stay near the strand – a lot of the options on this list can be walked to.
